Last year I blogged about incorporating my own photography into my teaching. This post will draw on parts of that, as I share how I recently made a learning activity based on my own travels around the Canadian province of Québec.

Last year I had my students make a travel journal based on my own travels around Québec (you can read more about it in this post). In theory I liked the activity, but it proved to be too challenging for many students, so this year I changed it up a bit. The objective of the activity was to review time, day and date in a way that wasn’t drab and boring. The first thing I did was show them the PowerPoint below, which takes them through all the places I’ve visited in Québec with my own photos, some of which are hanging in my classroom as posters. Some of these places are locations that students will visit on their trip to Québec in 8th grade, so it was a fun way to introduce them to that as well.

Students enjoyed learning fun facts about the province of Québec, and they also learned the difference between Québec the province and Québec City, what a province is, and what poutine is, if they didn’t already know. I also shared with them where to get poutine in Saratoga.

After reading the PowerPoint, we played this Quizizz to review what they learned. Students were allowed to answer the PowerPoint. The goal was to practice time, day, and date, not memorize random information I had just provided.

I’m always looking for ways to incorporate my own experiences into my teaching and this activity ticked that box. You’re welcome to use these resources in your own teaching but it would probably be more meaningful if you made your own version and just use mine as a template.
