In my last post, I shared my plans from my first week of teaching elementary French once a week after school to 3rd through 5th graders. In this post I’ll share my plans from the second week of the six week program.

Students learned a little bit about likes and dislikes last week, so we recapped by going over “J’aime and “Je n’aime pas” and stating whether they liked or disliked various items. Note that some of the items are food items which appear in a song that we sang at the end of class, so there was a little bit of pre-teaching here. Below is a slideshow I made with emojis. This week, students started on their take home books, that they will take home at the end of the six weeks. My colleague AJ has a book binder, so I printed all the pages (I printed the front cover on colored paper and added a piece of colored paper at the end for a back cover) and bound them so the students have a nice memento and record of their learning. Below are the pages that students worked on this week. Click here to access the whole book.

Students also received a list of likes and dislikes (see below and click here to access it yourself). They drew and wrote in French two things they like and two things they do not like and shared them with the class.

Next we played a game I call “Voilà.” Students can play in groups against their groupmates or as a team against other teams. I find that the game runs more smoothly when students are working together in teams. Essentially, each team gets an envelope with pictures in it (I printed them on cardstock to make them more durable). These pictures were of likes and dislikes, as well as cognates referenced in the first class. Students laid these all out. Then, they put their hands on their head and I say a vocabulary term. The first team to hold up the image that corresponds to that term and say “Voilà !” gets a point. The team with the most points at the end wins. Click here to access the images, which you can print and cut out, as well as a master list of terms.

Finally, we learned the song “Bifteck” by Barbara MacArthur. It’s a silly song about likes, dislikes, and food. Below is a video version I found on YouTube. Email subscribers, click here to view the video.
