A few years ago I started these end of the year blog posts where I share photos from the school year. Being a photographer, I always have my camera ready to capture the various activities we do throughout the year. Here are some of my favorite photos from this year.

Students generate norms for class. Click here to read more about this activity, inspired by La Masetra Loca.

Students put together sentences with words color-coded for gender. This is an activity that I tried to digitize during Covid, but determined that the hands-on version is better for learning. Click here to learn about other “old” activities I brought back this year.

The flag of the Democratic Republic of Congo is drawn with sidewalk chalk outside of the school by a member of the French Club in honor of National French Week. Click here to learn about this and other activities I do with my French Club.

I hold up a student’s keychain with an Algerian flag design. Students each got assigned a French-speaking country at random and had to locate it on a map and draw it on their keychain, as part of a National French Week activity. Click here to learn more about how I did this activity with pumpkins the year before!

A student models their keychain on their backpack.

Students retrieve their shoes in the hall to see what St-Nicolas left them. I used an app on my phone called Spectre to simulate a long exposure.

A student reads a letter from their pen pal in France. Click here to learn more about this project.

A bûche de Noël brought in by a student is ready to be eaten. Click here to learn more about how I introduce students to winter holidays in the French-speaking world.

A student works on a travel itinerary using authentic French websites. Click here to learn more about this activity.

Students hold up the results of their Write, Draw, Pass activity, an idea from Martina Bex. Click here to learn about this and other activities I adapted from other teachers.

A fresh coat of snow sits on the trees at the edge of my school’s property.

Scenes from my annual crêpe event. Parent volunteers heat up premade crêpes and put the fillings in them according to orders students make in French.

A student tries flipping a crêpe, a Chandeleur tradition that students learn about before they have their crêpes.

A student decorates a mask after learning about Mardi Gras and Carnaval traditions in the French-speaking world.

Students perform in the school’s outstanding production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

Homemade beignets, gumbo, jambalaya, and King’s Cake for Mardi Gras are ready to be eaten.

Moroccan flags display names of staff and students who donated to the French Club’s Morocco Earthquake Relief Fundraiser. Students came up with the idea for the fundraiser and collected donations outside the cafeteria.

Students write compliments to each other in French. Click here to learn more about this activity.

A student shows their decorated fish to place on someone’s back for Poisson d’avril.

A student reads another pen pal letter.

My plush phryge Olympic mascot that I bought to supplement an activity I did with my students. Click here to read more about the activity.

Elementary students play a color and animal identification game in a lesson led by middle school French Club students. Click here to learn more about this project.

Middle school French Club students introduce colors and numbers to elementary students.

French treats await my students at my annual awards ceremony.

A student’s pétanque set sits on the ground during our pique-pique. Students learned how to play pétanque beforehand and tried their hand at it outside.

A student holds a slice of brie at our pique-nique.

Students enjoy bounce houses and giant inflatable balls at our annual field day, called MapleFest.

The Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing, NY is seen from the Lac du Saint-Sacrément steamboat on our school’s annual 7th grade boat trip.
